Support Network Troubleshooting and Consultation
At some point in our lives, we, or someone we know – whether it be a family member or a patient, will experience a health crisis and need help. It is often a cultural contradiction to ask for help from one’s community. This leaves families struggling in isolation. with those around them watching helplessly.
In this multi-media workshop, Jennifer will provide candid insider views from both perspectives of receiving and giving help with readings from her book: Bone Knowing: a True Story of Coming to Life in the Face of Impending Loss and video interviews from helpers in another family’s support network. With prior experience as a hospice social worker and as Director of Healing Arts at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Jennifer also shares from her professional experience of helping people resource support for themselves. She will identify and address roadblocks that often prevent help from happening, move into the nuts and bolts of setting up the support network, and troubleshoot issues that arise along the way. An experiential of a mock initial meeting will bring didactics to life.
Objectives –with this training you should be able to:
- Identify roadblocks that get in the way of giving/ receiving help and how to navigate them.
- Explain structure of support network and communication protocol.
- Explain pros and cons between high tech/low tech models.
- Plan and carry out an initial meeting to initiate support network.
- Identify sensitive issues that arise once help network is running and how to address them.
- Understand how end-of-life issues impact the support network.
